Fish Talk in the News – Friday, June 14

  • The New England Fishery Management Council recommended reducing Atlantic herring catch levels for fishing year 2020 to about 25 million pounds – the lowest level in decades. Managers also reduced quota last year and recommended further cuts because of concerns about population health and poor recruitment. Patrice McCarron, executive director of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, told AP News, “Maine lobstermen will continue to identify new bait sources to further diversify our bait supply and develop efficiencies in our bait use.” The Council’s decision awaits federal approval.   • Jeff Kneebone, a scientist at the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium, is studying the impacts of catch-and-release fishing on sandbar sharks. Kneebone is working with fishermen on Cape Cod to collect information about how the fish are caught, handled, and released. WGBH reports, “Kneebone wants to know more about what happens after they are caught and released. When they die, why?” The end goal is to produce recommendations for fishermen.
  • The Maine Congressional Delegation sent a letter to President Trump last week urging him “to provide relief to members of the lobster industry affected by the ongoing trade war with China – much as American farmers received government support to mitigate negative economic consequences,” according to a press release from Senator King’s office. U.S. lobster exports to China had greatly increased in recent years and China had become the second largest importer of Maine lobster prior to the tariffs. To help with the tariff impact, the delegation wants the Trump Administration to “provide resources and aid intended to grow domestic demand for U.S. lobster and assist with the development of new export markets.”
