- As many readers have probably heard, a recently released stock assessment for Gulf of Maine cod shows that the stock, which many thought was rapidly rebuilding, may actually be in serious trouble. Doug Fraser at the Cape Cod Times has a balanced and thorough article on the issue.
- Recent studies have suggested that fish may be more susceptible to climate change and ocean acidification than previously thought, as Heather Goldstone reports on her Climatide blog here and here.
- A more upbeat story: Recently, members from the Coast Guard, NOAA Law Enforcement, the NEFMC and commercial fishermen met to collaborate on solutions for ways to display stowed fishing gear that will allow both the Coast Guard and fishermen to do their jobs more effectively and safely.
- The New York Times Green blog details the latest smartphone application to inform consumers about their seafood choices: Safe Sushi, which lets you know the mercury levels of the fish on your plate (and soon to be in your stomach).
