Senate Field Hearing on Groundfish Management this Morning

This morning at 9 a.m. at the State House in Boston, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation will hold a field hearing on the first year of implementation of Amendment 16 to the Northeast Multispecies (Groundfish) Fishery Management Plan.

Conservation Law Foundation issued a statement in advance of the hearing discussing the positive outcomes of Amendment 16 thus far and laying out recommendations for constructive steps forward that will improve those outcomes. Read the statement here.

There was also buzz about the hearing in the media over the weekend, with an opinion piece by Senator Kerry (who is holding the hearing) in the Gloucester Daily Times, an Associated Press interview with NOAA’s Jane Lubchenco (who will appear at the hearing) in the Boston Globe, and a great post in Michael Conathan’s “Fish on Fridays” series about the potential for cooperation between fishermen, regulators and environmentalists in the New England groundfish fishery.
