This week in Massachusetts the state legislature’s Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture heard testimony on what to do, or not do, about the management of striped bass. Some interests are trying to pit commercial against recreational fishermen, by arguing that the commercial fishery should be shut down. Others say most fishermen would rather see both parts of the bass fishery remain viable. The Committee did not ultimately take a vote on the proposed legislation.

A great article in Grist asked “Can carnivorous fish go vegetarian?” There are some new and interesting ways that aquaculture businesses are attempting to feed their fish with plant-based food, like with new non-GMO soybeans. The article concludes that forage fish, traditionally harvested for aquaculture feed, are under pressure for intense fishing and need management, even given these new vegetarian feeds.
