• A few weeks ago, President Obama announced a plan to reorganize the Department of Commerce and relocate NOAANational Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A government agency responsible for the regulation and protection of the atmosphere and marine resources. This federal agency is based in Washington, D.C. and falls under the Secretary of Commerce. from Commerce to the Department of the Interior. Michael Conathan of the Center for American Progress blogs about what the proposed move would mean for NOAA and ocean-related policy. He concludes by determining that “[a]t the end of the day, the department in which NOAA resides is less vital to its underlying mission than the integrity and independence with which it carries out its mission.”
